Summary

The regular season ended Thursday and the eight-team field is set. Minnesota is our pick to win the title at 36.8%, but the chart shows how open this is: the other seven teams combined are 63.2%. The sharpest drop-off is between the top four and everyone else. Minnesota, Golden State, Atlanta and Las Vegas account for about 91% of the title odds, while no lower seed reaches 5%.

Look at the gap between the bars, too. Golden State and Atlanta are slightly more likely than Minnesota to reach the semifinals, but Minnesota turns that into better Finals and title odds because the model rates it as the strongest team once the matchups get tougher.

All eight playoff teams sorted by title probability, with their chances to reach the semifinals, reach the Finals and win the title; Minnesota leads at 36.8% and the rest of the field combines for 63.2%

Highlights: what the forecast expects

The bracket reads left to right as the path the model finds most likely: Lynx over Valkyries in the Finals at 61.6%. Three of the four first-round favorites sit near 80%. The exception is Aces vs. Fever at 63.0%, the closest series on the board. The model even has the Fever slightly favored to win Game 2 at home (51.4%), the only first-round game where it picks the lower seed.

The later rounds tighten fast. Lynx over Dream is 66.5%, and Valkyries over Aces is 56.3%, close to a coin flip.

Golden State's case rests on the best defense in the league, and it's trending the right way. The Valkyries allowed 95.8 points per 100 possessions for the season, well ahead of league average (104.7) and next-best Atlanta (100.4). Over the last 10 games it was 88.7. The risk is offense, which ranks 7th of 15. One flag for a possible semifinal: Golden State went 0-3 against Las Vegas this season, though all three games were in May and June.

Golden State points allowed per 100 possessions for the full season, first 29 games, last 15 games and last 10 games, against next-best Atlanta (100.4) and the league average (104.7)

Outliers: where this forecast could break

These are the spots where the numbers move the most, not results yet.

Olivia Miles' calf is the biggest swing in the bracket. Minnesota went 31-9 with her and 2-2 without her. The chart shows the title race narrowing step by step. If she misses the whole first round, Minnesota (26.9%) and Golden State (26.5%) are nearly level. If she's limited all postseason, Golden State becomes the favorite, and if she's out entirely, Minnesota falls to 8.7%. She missed the last two regular-season games with what she called a precautionary calf injury.

Recent form tightens two first-round series. Washington went 8-2 over its last 10 games. Weighted for that form, the Mystics' series chance nearly doubles, from 21.7% to 41.9%. New York is harder to read: Breanna Stewart is hot (26.0 points on 64.9% true shooting over her last three games) while Sabrina Ionescu is cold (39.2% true shooting over her last five). Counting only games Stewart played, Minnesota's series odds drop from 77.2% to 62.5%. Stewart sat the finale with knee soreness, and there's been no update since. On the main model, Aces vs. Fever is still the closest series.

If playoff basketball rewards defense, the pick flips. Our main forecast weights offense and defense equally because 21 seasons of WNBA playoff data (394 games) show no reliable extra edge for defense. But this is the assumption that matters most for the top two. At a 60/40 defense weighting, Golden State becomes the favorite at 39.9%, and at 70/30 it rises to 56.7%.

Lynx and Valkyries title probabilities at 50/50, 60/40 and 70/30 defense weighting; Golden State leads at 60/40 and 70/30

How we forecast: team ratings adjusted for opponent and venue, built from 2026 game results, with adjustments for player availability, playoff experience and college-tournament performance. Tested on 21 WNBA playoff seasons, where it picked the winner in about 67% of games it hadn't seen. No betting odds used. These are probabilities, not guarantees.
